COLOR AND PERSONALITY

Color plays a role in our lives that is far more powerful than we imagine.  Color influences us emotionally, physically and psychologically.  The energy of color vibrates within us.  The energy we get from color gives us the ability to maintain balance and stay healthy.  Color, the food for our soul, feeds our body, mind, and spirit.

The beauty of color can inspire, delight, and uplift your spirit.  It can change your moods.  It can stimulate or sedate, excite or calm

Physically

  • Red stimulates circulation, raises blood pressure, creates stress reactions, creates gas and constipation.
  • Orange aids in digestion.
  • Yellow stimulates mental activity, strengthens the nervous system, and activates motor skills.
  • Green heals and relaxes the body and stimulates the heart and respiratory systems.
  • Pink slows down the circulation to the muscles and tranquilizes the body.

USING COLORS FOR HEALING

Color therapy is a technique of restoring imbalance
by means of applying color to the body to heal.

Some benefits to color therapy:

  • restoring balance

  • promotes mental clarity

  • causes cellular and hormonal changes

  • reduce pain of arthritis

  • ease stress

  • decreases blood pressure and heart rate

  • fills you with energy

  • physical healing

  • alleviate pain

  • spiritual healing

  • change physical, mental and emotional states

  • improves study habits

  • good for migraines

  • reduce hyperactivity

  • suppress the appetite for overweight people

  • increase children's attention span

  • find peace for reflection and inspiration

  • energy boost

  • overcome emotional experiences

Several ways to do this include: shining colored lights on a person; being in a room painted a certain color; wearing certain colored clothes; visualizing specific colors shining on you while you sit with your eyes closed; eating fruits and vegetables of certain colors; and holding or wearing certain gemstones or crystals.

Using color is one way you can help yourself to harmony!  Studies have shown that when color is introduced to the human system it causes cellular and hormonal changes, which bring the cells into balance with the color.  Colors have been known to ease stress, to fill you with energy and even to alleviate pain and other physical problems.

Color is a vital force, a very strong power and influence over all our lives. Knowledge, judgment and intuition are all combined in the capable management of color. It is a discipline, an art.

SELF-HEALING WITH COLOR

Spring colors feature warm and light tints like Turquoise, lilac, peach, coral, scarlet, violet, emerald, sunshine yellow, cream and sand.  They create a joyful and nurturing ambience.

Summer colors are very subtle: maroon, rose, powder blue, sage green, pale yellow, lavender, plum, oyster and taupe.  They have elegance that is also cool and contained.

Autumn colors are related to the fire element and are warm colors:  mustard, olive green, flame, peacock, burnt orange, teal and burgundy.  They suggest maturity and depth.

Winter colors are connected with the earth element: black, white, magenta, cyan, purple, lemon, silver, indigo, royal blue and jade.  They are bold and powerful.

People with strong business sense, confidence and a practical nature favor winter colors.  Spring colors, are popular with those of an artistic, sensitive and quiet disposition.

HUMAN RESPONSES TO COLOR
  • The warm color of reds and oranges activate and stimulate us
  • The cool colors of blues and violets calm us
  • Colors reaching the body through the eyes to the brain have an immediate effect on the involuntary autonomic nervous system, changing our physical, mental and emotional states.
  • Color is the food of our emotions.  It reflects our thoughts and moods consciously and unconsciously.
  • Combinations of bright, festive colors are powerfully attractive particularly to young children.

SPECIFIC COLOR PLACEMENT

Sometimes it is helpful to introduce specific colors into the environment for immediate short-term effect.

Everyday use of color

  • After relaxation or meditation, try gazing at the color red for about a minute.  This will integrate the benefits of meditation into your body and prepare you to return to the normal world.
  • Yellow in a study area will help students studying for exams, because it will help them be less tired and is generally more effective.
  • Lots of different colored pieces in a room help to reduce hyperactivity and increase children’s attention span.
  • Using several different colored pens and paper increases learning skills and ability to recall.
  • Any reaction of an emotional nature to color, either positive or negative, can indicate how color can be used to promote healing and wellbeing.

USING COLORS FOR HEALING

WORKING WITH THE CHAKRAS

Color healing work with the root chakra use softer shades of reds, warm deep rose colors are best.  You can try wearing clothes in this color range, or putting appropriate colored objects into your living environment.  You can also use browns and mauves.

When you are visualizing colors for healing, try to see them as vibrant and translucent, like the colors in stained glass when sunlight is passing through it.

Sacral Chakra colors are of vitality.  Amber and gold should be used in visualizations and healing. When recovering from illness, feeling tired or just needing an energy boost, visualizing orange light flowing into the sacral chakra is effective.  A bowl of oranges in a room or some orange gemstones can also help.

Solar Plexus Chakra color is clear bright yellow (a mental color).  Helpful when doing work or study that involves memorizing facts.  Put yellow folders and accessories on your desk.

For healing, the gold and rose colors are best.  Sunlight on the solar plexus can help the metabolism, the eyesight and the overall sense of wellbeing in the physical body.

Rose brings the softness, which the solar plexus also requires to be gentle.

The Heart Chakra’s color is basically the spring green which heals the pain from being over-vulnerable to life and helps to open the heart when it has “hardened” as a result of opposition or devastating emotional experiences.

Rose Quartz brings warmth and softness and is comforting to the bereaved.

Rose Amethyst is strengthening to the heart after illnesses or in stress conditions.  It also balances blood pressure.

All blues, from the palest to the darkest, affect the Throat Chakra.  Most common recommended for healing use is deep lapis lazuli blue.  Turquoise and aquamarines are valuable in strengthening the ability to communicate with large groups.  Teachers, writers and those in the media can benefit from wearing and meditating on these hues.

Silver is strengthening to the throat chakra and should always be visualized when throat infections occur.  All these colors also affect the thyroid and parathyroid.

For the Third-eye Chakra (brow chakra): Use indigo to train perception.

Turquoise for clarity
Mauve for helping the hormonal system.

The Crown Chakra colors: violet has the highest vibration rate.  It is a cleansing color – visualizing it at the crown chakra will help to cleanse impurities from the energy field.

White & gold help encourage contact with your higher self and guides.

White symbolizes perfection and purity

Gold symbolizes the power of the sun and sacredness.  It also symbolizes purity

COLOR INSIDE THE HOME

Colors with red in them will warm up a cool space, such as a north-facing room.  Warm colors will also make a space feel smaller.  Blues will make a room feel cool and appear larger.  Dark hues will reduce the apparent size of the space and light hues will make it seem larger than it is.

Entrance halls

Colors here will suggest whether the hall is a barrier or a welcome sign.  White or cream is a neutral color that acts as an emotional air lock.  Rich, deep colors will create a strong impression of personality and a clear boundary to demarcate territory.

Strong reds are energizing, while muted reds suggest solid powerful and practical comfort.  Pinks, depending on the tint, offer a warm, friendly, non-threatening atmosphere.  Blues are calming and sedating.  A deep blue will help to cool over-stressed and over-stimulated nervous systems, generating relaxation and a sense of peace and quiet.  Greens and browns suggest the natural world.

Kitchens and Bathrooms

Need colors that harmonize with their functions.  Good idea to paint bathrooms in warm tones – yellows, pinks and oranges.  They give a comfortable, relaxing brightness and reflect the energies of cleansing and caring.

  • Yellow in the kitchen, can be over stimulating to the digestive system, unless used with blues and greens. Red can heighten emotions and can cause recklessness and a lack of consideration, whereas warm shades of terracotta connect to the practical earthiness of cooking and baking.

  • Blue and white are cool and efficient.  These are not the best colors for a kitchen that is a social space as well as an area of food preparation, but their clean freshness together makes them ideal as a color for plates and other crockery.

Living Rooms

A background color chosen from a pale version of one’s favorite color is supportive and in harmony with the individual’s energy field.

Bedrooms

Colors that are restful and calming are better in bedrooms.  Muted and mixed tones are preferable to strong, bold colors.  Blues calm the mind and lower the body’s levels of activity, naturally encouraging sleep.  Yellow may be over stimulating.  Pale violets will encourage relaxing, dreamy states and pale pinks will give a feeling of security.

Studies and Workrooms

Bright yellow promotes mental clarity and inspiration

  • Small amounts of yellow like a lamp stand or letter rack, work just as well as yellow walls or curtains

  • Even a sheet of yellow paper that can be placed in view can be very effective when you are feeling particularly tired

Cool blues calm down thought processes so that intuition and new ideas can emerge.  Some blue can help to keep a peaceful ambience.

Reds and oranges are good for practical work, since they provide energy and focus, balanced by complementary greens to encourage calmness of mind and emotions.  These colors are best for sewing, painting, and others creative arts, as they provide a comfortable space where work can be carried out for long periods.

Color Therapies
  • Red filtered light will energize the nervous system

  • Blue filtered light will sedate the nervous system and significantly reduce the pain of arthritis – the longer the exposure the better the results.

  • Gradual and consistent exposure to yellow light decreases blood pressure and heart rate and increases energy and endurance.

  • Yellow, represents the east, the earth element

  • Green represents north, the air element

  • Red represents the west, the fire element.

  • Blue represents the south, the water element.

  • Visualizing these colors and compass directions and then visualizing blue and white flowing through you, is exceptionally relaxing and healing.

The visualization of pink light has a calming, integrating and healing effect on yourself and your surroundings.

Besides using colored crystals and gemstones for color therapy, there are a few other color choices.

Color Healing Using Candles

Light a candle of the color that is appropriate for what you are attempting to manifest:

  • White – if you want truth and purity

  • Yellow – if your want to gain knowledge

  • Pink – to send love

  • Blue – for the resolution of a spiritual problem

  • Green – for monetary and material concerns

  • Lavender – especially good for healing

  • Silver – good for protection

As you light the candle say a prayer and state what you need.  You must be specific.  Thank God (or whoever) for granting you what you need.
